| Ship Wrecks in Sipalay |
|
Sipalay is one of the rare places,
where you can dive on a real big war ship. Just a couple of minutes away from our Dive Shop, we can offer several Ship Wrecks. So far, we have discovered already four ship wrecks in the area of Sipalay. There is still a good chance to find more wrecks. |
| MS JOJO, a freighter which sank in the early 80’s. The approx. 80m long wreck is at a depth of 20m at its topmost level. | |
| SS Panay sank in 1942 during World War II. It’s approx. 90 m long, in very good condition, with the topmost part at 30m depth. | |
| In the
summer 1942, early in the day, 4 Japanese planes circled the cove twice.
They came back later - just before noon - and started dropping
torpedoes. The ship was hit but not directly as apparently the planes
could not maneuver well because of the mountain and the tall trees on
the shore. Many runs after they left. The ship was already on fire. Around 6 o' clock in the evening, the hold where the arms and ammunitions were kept, probably was reached by the fire. The ship exploded, probably cut in half because both ends were up and the middle sunk immediately after the biggest bang. The first salvage was after the Liberation in the seventies and the final one in the eighties. |
